Songs of Hope, Protest and Change
The workshop explores the influence of music on social justice throughout the 20th and 21st Century.  Veteran song writers Bev Grant and Charlie King have both been writing and recording songs for over 40 years.  This workshop will take as a starting point two songs that exemplify the craft, with commentary into the process of writing them and the reasons why they work.  Bev & Charlie have been at the heart of the using the power of song to influence and support labor rights and social justice issues over the years.  They are wonderfully warm people with wonderful and interesting stories to share about the history of songs that record, shape and change our history.  As time allows, workshop attendees will be able to present a song for critical feedback and editing.

On display are prints of original photographs taken by Bev Grant, one of the original activists who participated in the September 6, 1968 Miss America Protests, a watershed moment that pushed the Women’s Liberation Movement into America’s national consciousness. To contrast the historicity of the photos, the exhibit will also feature work by artists Maura McHugh, Emily Harris and Casey Neumann that express thoughts and views of contemporary women’s issues and feminism. Artists will be in attendance. http://www.puffinculturalforum.org/events/
